Maximum capacity: 150 persons
Excursion code: ATH-1-2024LOC
This is a guided half-day tour of the key archaeological sites in Athens. You will visit one of the world's most important monuments, the Acropolis, all surrounding archaeological sites, which represent universal symbols of Ancient Greek civilization, as well as more recent landmarks, that showcase the evolution of the city over the centuries.
This is a customized private tour only for ISIT 2024 participants. The tour will start with a Panoramic tour of Athens: You will see the Constitution Square (“Syntagma” in Greek), the House of Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier and the National Library. Driving down Herod Atticus Street, you will see the Evzones in their picturesque uniform, wearing the characteristic “foustanella” – ruffled skirt-like garments. You shall have the chance to admire the Presidential Palace as you pass by it on the bus. Short stop at the Panathenaic Stadium, the white marble arena, where the first modern Olympic Games were hosted in Athens in 1896.
Continue on foot towards the Acropolis and visit the Architectural Masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens: The Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and finally the Parthenon.
Walk around Areios Pagos, also known as “Hill of Ares”, located just to the right of the exit of the Acropolis. In classical times, this was the site of the Council of Nobles and the Judicial Court, that mainly dealt with homicide cases.
Visit the new Acropolis Museum, which was founded to exhibit all the significant finds from the Sacred Rock and its surroundings.
Explore Plaka, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens. Passing through Anafiotika neighborhood, Plaka’s hidden gem, you will learn all about its history. Connect the dots between the past and the present by letting your guide unveil unknown parts of history and significant details on historical buildings, beautiful old chapels, and numerous monuments.
The day will end at Monastiraki Square, located at the heart of the city. Monastiraki Square is a well-known meeting place for Athenians and the area around it offers many things to see and do, from just wandering around, having a coffee or visiting the most popular flea market in Athens. Standing in the middle of the square, you can see a blend of historical eras, architecture and cultures; old churches, mosques, archaeological monuments and museums.
After the visit your guide will leave you at Plaka or will escort you back to Athenaeum InterContinental.
